Welcome to the Manchester Interdisciplinary Mathematics Undergraduate Conference (MIMUC)!

This year, we're excited to host over 100 taught students from the Faculty of Science and Engineering and beyond.

MIMUC is a two-day student-led conference at the University of Manchester that brings together undergraduates, master’s students, researchers and industry professionals to share mathematical ideas, explore interdisciplinary connections, and present topics they’re passionate about. The programme will feature a mix of student presentations and plenary talks from invited speakers. We will also be running a CV drop box on the day which will be shared with our sponsors.

We will be awarding prizes for:

  • The Best Student Talks

    • First Place

    • Second Place

    • Third Place

  • The best talk by a foundation year or first year student

Why not gain some fantastic experience by volunteering* at MIMUC? Send an email to let us know!

* This role counts towards the Stellify award.

Plenary Speakers

Ayesha Irfan

Icebreaker and an Introduction to Maths Communication

I am a final year PhD student in Mathematics at the University of Bristol. I work on the intersection between Random Matrix Theory and Number Theory. I am also a Data Scientist at Naimuri, a company based in Manchester.

I will present an introduction to maths communication, as well as an icebreaker. We will cover some useful advice on explaining mathematics to different audiences and how to present complex ideas clearly.

Dr Charlotte Mégrourèche

Looping mathematics: is this mathematics?

What gets to count as mathematics? In this presentation, I introduce a collaboration with a basket weaver who engages a distinctive form of mathematical practice through a weaving technique known as ‘cycloid looping’. I present some of her pieces in which she explores numerical patterns, curvature and topological questions through material experimentation. I use these examples to open questions about what mathematics can be and who we recognise as doing it.

Dr Daniel Shiu

ML-KEM: the mathematics on which we are about to bet the Internet

The Internet is about to make a big change as we try to deprecate our existing public key cryptography methods such as RSA and elliptic curves because they are vulnerable to attack by a moderately-sized quantum computer. In their place people are aiming to use a "module learning with errors" based approach called ML-KEM. In the talk I shall describe the mathematics behind ML-KEM and the computational problem that underpins it that we hope is hard to solve.

We are always recruiting top candidates and we invest heavily in teaching and training. Applications for our 2026 summer internships are open now - they give you a real sense of working at Jane Street full-time. Learn more.

Learn more about us and our roles at our programs and events. No finance experience needed. We look for a passion for critical thinking and creative problem-solving – people like you!"

"The London Mathematical Society (LMS), founded in 1865, is the UK’s learned society for mathematics, dedicated to advancing mathematical knowledge, supporting nathematicians and fostering a vibrant community.

Through publications, grants, conferences, and educational initiatives, the LMS supports mathematicians at all stages of their careers. Student members gain access to leading mathematical journals, networking opportunities, workshops and lectures, as well as resources that support engagement and opportunities to advance mathematical education and research.
